09 February 2021

Agricultural Innovation Australia Ltd (AIA) has appointed three directors to its inaugural board.

The new directors commenced their terms in February 2021.

Joining the inaugural AIA Board are:

Mr Bernie Brookes AM - Chair
Mr Brookes has substantial board and executive experience across retail, agriculture, data and technology companies, including as CEO and Managing Director of Myer Holdings for nine years, and numerous senior roles in buying and marketing for Woolworths.

He served as a non-executive director for the Dairy Industry Association and Ingham’s Enterprises, and is the current chair of embedded tracing technology company, Dotz Tech and the CEO Institute Syndicates.

Dr Anne Astin AM PSM
Dr Astin is a distinguished food scientist who has held board and senior executive positions across government and industry.

She has experience in the public health, food and agriculture sectors, currently chairing the boards of Australia’s Food Agility Co-operative Research Centre, Dairy Food Safety Victoria and the SafeFish partnership. Anne also serves on the Sheep Producers Australia board and has held directorships at Dairy Australia and Australian Dairy Farmers.

Ms Heather Stacy AM
Ms Stacy has significant agribusiness, workplace culture, and governance experience in the corporate, government and non-profit sectors within Australia and internationally.

She has held senior management positions at Alliance Group, Fonterra and BlueScope Steel, as well as served on the boards of WorkSafe Victoria and AgriFutures Australia.

AIA’s board is independent and skills-based. As the company’s founding members, Australia’s 15 Rural Research and Development Corporations approved the suitability and selection criteria for the inaugural board.

“Having directors with diverse experience is critical to ensuring AIA successfully delivers outcomes for its members and the broader agriculture industry,” said outgoing interim AIA Chair, Andrew Ferguson.

“The calibre of these newly appointed directors, and their vast experience across a broad range of sectors both domestically and internationally, will ensure AIA can effectively attract investment to deliver transformative outcomes for Australian agriculture.

“Mr Brookes as Chair will be an asset to the AIA board, with his wealth of business experience, including in capital markets, and his extensive domestic and international networks.

“Dr Astin’s deep understanding of commercialisation, innovation and industry collaboration within the agricultural research and development context will also be invaluable to AIA.

“Having worked in multiple agricultural industries and across supply chains, Ms Stacy brings a strong commercial perspective on R&D, innovation and adoption.”

Mr Ferguson said that the inaugural board’s immediate priority will be the identification and appointment of AIA’s Chief Executive Officer.
